Ludwig von Mises said that socialism means banning reason from the economy. This statement comes to life under the pen of an almost anonymous Romanian writer: Gheorghe Dragomir. His book Socialism, subiectivism – însemnări sub regimul ceauşist ale unui „fermier” (Socialism, Subjectivism – Notes of a ”Farmer” Under the Ceauşescu Regime) is a sharp radiography of 1970-1975 Romania, emphasizing the chaotic character of the socialist system. The general atmosphere of reject invasion, chronic penury of food, irritating surpluses of products needed by nobody, exports at any costs or megalomaniac investment projects – resulting in a low general standard of living and a modest development of the whole economy – is successfully recreated, so as to always be remembered.
