The “love affair” between the intellectuals and the state has
been excellently theorized by (classical) liberal thinkers such as Ludwig
von Mises, Bertrand de Jouvenel, Friedrich von Hayek or Robert Nozick, to
mention only a few of them. In essence, their arguments analyze and describe
the resentment of the intellectuals who consider themselves to be marginalized
in a “mercantile” world and who, as a consequence, virulently attack private
property and its natural corollary – capitalism –, by constantly demanding
the expansion of state power and attributions, together with state support
for culture through subsidies, scholarships, grants, jobs etc.
